J Balvin Graces The Cover Of The FADER’s Global Issue

J Balvin, the breakout colombian star follows in the footsteps of artists such as Drake, Nicki Minaj, Zayn Malik, Kendrick Lamar & more that have recently graced the cover of the influential music, style & culture magazine.

J Balvin is Fader’s first latin music cover subject in over a decade, and this also marks the first time in the publication’s history that a cover story will be published in both English and Spanish. (Read the story in both languages here).

The FADER’s Global Issue surveys new music from around the world, and how music travels today. J Balvin’s cover story explores how he has become an international success without orienting himself towards the U.S. exclusively; his experiences with panic attacks; and his reaction to Donald Trump’s assessment of Mexican immigrants. Contributing writer Marlon Bishop and photographer Ryan Lowry traveled across Latin America for the piece, following Balvin on tour and documenting the connections he shares with fans across the globe.

What J Balvin thinks on the meaning of ‘mainstream’ in a changing world:

I want to keep making history in Spanish. I want to invite the mainstream into my world, and to my sound, and to what I’m doing. And I want mainstream artists to respect me, and accept Latino artists as equals, without us having to sing in English. I want them to know that I can compete globally with whomever, in Spanish. I want Rihanna to pick up my phone call. I want the biggest fashion designers in the world to send me clothes just like they send them to Kanye, and that’s starting to happen.

J Balvin talks on canceling his Miss USA performance after Donald Trump’s comments regarding Mexican immigrants:

I was personally offended because I also worked illegally in the U.S., painting houses and fixing roofs…I wasn’t a narco or a rapist. And I thought about the people I worked with, and they were good people just trying to get ahead. That’s why I didn’t even have to think about [canceling]. Dignity isn’t negotiable.

J Balvin confesses his struggles with panic attacks:

I lost the desire to live. I went to lots of doctors and tried alternative medicine. I didn’t want to go to a psychiatrist because I thought it was for crazy people. And it turned out I was crazy…I’m afraid to die young, before I accomplish my dreams.

The FADER’s Global Issue with J Balvin will be available on newsstands March 8
